Basket consists of an outer metal casing contg. several dividing walls located at 90 degrees w.r.t. each other and forming a honeycomb of long, vertical compartments, each of which has a rectangular or square cross-section and receives one fuel can. Each of the dividing walls is flat and smooth, and is neither covered nor has any projections on its surfaces. Dividing walls are only welded at their top and bottom ends to each other and to the outer casing, their remaining longitudinal edges being provided with recesses forming long gaps through which the cooling water in the pool can flow through the compartments. The length of the welded joints is restricted to the min. required to ensure that the basket has adequate mechanical strength. After removal from a reactor, the cans are stored in the pool while their radioactivity decreases. The invention provides a basket permitting unrestricted flow of the pool water through the compartments. The basket does not become contaminated, and is easily cleaned via jets of water.
|
