Three dimensionally woven frame for brake discs - made from carbon or graphite rigid rods and fibre

Mfr. of brake discs comprises first prepg. a three dimensional woven frame, densifying this structure by impregnating with carbon and then surfacing the disc so formed by cutting it into slices. The frame is pref. cylindrical in shape with rows of spikes protruding radially outwards from the surface formed from rigid rods. Between the radial spikes a row of circumferential fibres is coiled while transversely a looped fibre is wound alternately around each row of spikes in the third dimension perpendicular to the circumferential fibres. The fibres are pref. of carbon or graphite. Discs are cut from the frameworks after densifying by slicing between the peripheral rows of rigid rods. The structure gives carbon brake discs of high mechanical strength.
