The support (80) of an electromagnetic brake or clutch comprises two annular projections (86a, 86b) formed at the surface. A first layer (88) of a magnetic material covers the entire surface and the annular projections. A second layer (94) of a friction material is laid down in the hollow between the two projections (86a, 86b). The whole assembly forms a plane surface which comprises two flush annular parts (92a, 92b) of the magnetic material and an intermediate flush part (94) of the friction material. The latter has a hexagonal structure. The major part of the crystals of the friction material have an orientation on their base planes 0001 parallel to the surface of the coating. <IMAGE>
