Substantially linear, amorphous vulcanizable high molecular weight copolymers of ethylene, an olefin of the general formula R-CH = CH2 wherein R is an alkyl group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and an olefinically unsaturated halogen containing hydrocarbon monomer in which the halogen atom or atoms are linked directly to carbon atoms bound by double bonds are made by copolymerizing the monomeric mixture in the presence of a halogen containing catalyst consisting of the reaction product between a vanadium compound and an aluminium or beryllium organometallic compound and optionally an ether, thioether, amine or trisubstituted phosphine. The halogen-containing monomer may be p-bromoallylbenzene, pentafluoroallylbenzene, 2-chloro-1,4 - pentadiene, 2 - bromo - 1,4 - pentadiene, 4 - bromo - 1,4 - hexadiene, 6 - chloro - 1,5-hexadiene, 1 - chloro - cyclo - octadiene - 1,5, 1 - bromo - cyclooctadiene - 1,5, 1 - chloro - 4 - vinyl - cyclo - hexane - 1, 2 - chloro - 4 - vinyl-cyclohexene - 1, 2 - chloro - bicyclo - [2,2,1]-heptadiene - 2,5 - (2 - chloronorbornadiene), and 2,3 - dichlorobicyclo - [2,2,1] - heptadiene-2,5 - (2,3 - dichloronorbornadiene). The Specification contains extensive lists of suitable catalyst components of which the following are exemplified, VCl4 and aluminium trihexyl, VCl4 and aluminium diethyl monochloride, VCl4 and beryllium diethyl, vanadium trichloride pyridinate and aluminium diethyl monochloride, and vanadium oxytrichloride and aluminium diethyl monochloride. The reaction is preferably effected in an inert diluent, and the reaction terminated by addition of methanol and phenyl-beta-naphthyl-amine. The copolymers are purified by treatment with dilute HCl, water and acetone. The copolymer is vulcanized with zinc oxide or zinc stearate. |
