Lubricating or fuel oils have dissolved therein 0.001-10 wt per cent of an oil-soluble polymer containing units of at least one N-vinyl-2-piperazinone of formula where R1 is hydrogen, a C1-C18 alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, alkyl substituted aralkyl or a dialkylaminoalkyl group of up to 12 C atoms or a furfuryl group; R2 is a hydrogen or a methyl group; R3 is hydrogen, a C1-C18 alkyl group, phenyl, naphthyl, chlorophenyl, chloronaphthyl, (C1-C18 alkyl) phenyl, (C1-C18 alkyl) naphthyl, (C1-C18 alkoxy) phenyl, (C1-C18 alkoxy) naphthyl, an aralkyl or alkyl-substituted aralkyl group of up to 18 C atoms or a 2-furyl group; R4 is hydrogen or a C2-C4 alkyl group; and R5 is hydrogen or a C1-C4 alkyl group; with the proviso that R2 and R3 together, including the carbon atom to which they are attached, may form a saturated ring having 5-7 cyclic C atoms and which may include alkyl substituents, wherein R2 and R3 together may contain up to 18 C atoms; and R4 and R5 together, including the carbon atoms to which they are attached, may form a saturated ring having 5-7 cyclic C atoms and which may include alkyl substituents, wherein R4 and R5 together may contain up to 18 C atoms. The polymer may also contain units of one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers, e.g. acrylates, methacrylates, fumarates, maleates, itaconates, acrylamide, acrylonitrile styrene or a vinyl ester. The composition may also contain metal dithiophosphates, sulphurized oils and terpenes, phenolsulphides, sulphonates, polyacrylates, methacrylates, itaconates, fumarates and vinylcarboxylates, copolymers of acrylic esters and polar monovinylidene compounds such as N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone, vinyl-pyridines, aminoalkyl acrylates or methacrylates or polyethylene glycol acrylic esters, polybutenes, alkylphenol - alkylene oxide condensates, alkenylsuccinic anhydrides, silicones, phosphates, phenols, phenothiazine, amines, phenates, salicylates, calcium phenyl stearate, imidazolines and the reaction product of alkenyl succinic anhydrides reacted first with amines and then with boron compounds. The lubricating oil may be mineral or synthetic, e.g. di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate and complex esters formed from 2-ethyl-1,3-hexanediol, sebacic acid and 2-ethylhexanol. Fuels specified are gasoline, furnace oil, jet fuel and diesel fuel.
