1,029,847. Positive clutches. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. March 18, 1965 [May 4, 1964], No. 11468/65. Heading F2C. In a coned friction ring synchromesh gear each balk ring 60 carries a spring ring 76 which is compressed radially inwards as the shift sleeve 64 is moved from its neutral position, thereby gripping the balk ring and increasing the frictional force between the ring and the gear pinion 24 or 42 to be engaged, and so reducing the possibility of " beating " the synchromesh. The sleeve 64 is held in its neutral and engaged positions by a spring ring 68 which enters spaced grooves 66, 70, 72 in a hut member 46. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 1A (not shown), the ring is carried by the hub 46 and the grooves are formed in the sleeve 64. A lost-motion connection between the hub 46 and balk rings 60 is provided by a bar 80 the ends of which enter recesses 82 in the balk rings, the circumferential width of the recesses exceeding that of the bar by half the pitch of the balk ring teeth 62. In a further arrangement, Figs. 2, 2A (not shown), the recesses 82 are engaged by integral projections bent out from the hub 46. |
