A rotary scythe mower has separator elements 1 to orientate and re-erect any laid crop in a manner favourable to its cutting and is arranged so that no two adjacent cutting elements are driven with divergent rotational movement as seen on the side where uncut crop is presented for cutting, and no more than two immediately adjacent cutting elements are rotated in the same direction. The cutting elements may be such that their forward part, with respect to the direction of rotation, is inclined, domed or twisted downwards in order to create a vertically directed current of air.
