The medium voltage switch assembly includes a lockable pivoting commutator, mounted in a rectangular frame. The commutator pivots with arc extinguishing plates. A base plate(16) carrying the contacts is mounted on two pivot pins on the upright parts(1) of the frame. A rod(20) extends across the base plate passing through two slots (19) which are horizontal when the base plate is opened out. As the base plate is tipped up into the frame, the ends of the rod(20) come into contact with vertical U-shaped brackets inside the frame. By lifting the rod in its slots(19) the plates may be unlatched from its position in the frame.
