Tilting electric arc melting furnace - where alignment of transformer and furnace lid ensure min. mechanical stress on cables carrying electric current to electrodes

The furnace includes a lid which can be raised or lowered, and can also be swivelled on a vertical axis; and the lid carries electrodes used to melt the charge. On the lid are electrode connections joined by cables to a transformer. The lid forms two vertical planes of symmetry (A, A') in its closed and opened positions, both planes passing through the vertical pivot axis of the lid; and the transformer is located between plates (A, A'). The connections on the lid and the transformer are at different heights and/or spaced apart sideways; and the cables are arranged so they are in intersecting planes when the lid is closed. The middle connection on the transformer is pref. on a plane (B) midway between plates (A, A'). Used for example, in steel melting, using very high power such as 80 MVA, where the invention results in the cables being exposed to the min. mechanical stress so their life is greatly increased.
