Method of locating the position of a self-propelled machine, called hereinafter an operating machine, which is made to move on an immersed structure, such as a floating ship, along any line of displacement characterised in that a following machine (13) is associated with the said operating machine (10), the longitudinal position (X) of the said following machine along a line of displacement (14) selected as a reference line is identified at every moment, a relative servo-control between the operating machine and the following machine in terms of longitudinal displacement is provided along their respective lines of displacement and the transverse distance (Y) between the said machines is recorded at every moment.
