Pentachloropyridine and polychloro derivatives of 2-(trichloromethyl)pyridine are prepared by reacting 2,4-dichloro-6-(trichloromethyl)pyridine in the liquid state with chlorine at temperatures of at least 160 DEG C in the presence of a Lewis acid type catalyst. The products are useful as herbicides, pesticides, or as chemical intermediates for the preparation of other products useful, for example, as herbicides or pesticides. |
