Apparatus disposed between adjacent ends of two conveyers turns sheet material conveyed thereby through 90 degrees. The first conveyer comprises two pairs of opposed conveyer belts 12a, 12b engaging the edges of the sheet 10. The spacing of the belts of each pair and of the pairs is variable to accommodate different thicknesses and widths of the sheets. On delivery to the turning apparatus the sheet engages a switch 42 suspended from the pistonrod of a two-way ram 45 to actuate said ram to move in a direction opposite to the conveying direction. When the switch reaches the trailing edge of the sheet 10d it drops down and engages the same as a pawl and at the same time reverse the two-way ram to draw the sheet into abutment with two further switches 33. The switches 33 actuate a ram 31 to raise a relatively driven disc 26 into contact with the underside of the sheet and grip the same with a freely rotatable disc 25 mounted above the sheet. After a short delay the switches 33 are raised from the path of the sheet and a series of rollers 51 are raised above the level of a roller conveyer 13. The sheet is supported during the turning by guide rails or rollers 20, 54 and 51. On completion of the desired turning angle the sheet abuts a switch 50 which effects the lowering of the disc 26 and the rollers 51 to feed the sheet on to the roller conveyer 13. During the lowering operation the sheet abuts a farther switch 53 to effect the lowering of the switches 33. The apparatus may be disposed between two finishing machines (not shown) the first of which machines the edges 10a, 10b of the sheet and the second, after the turning of the sheet, machines the edges 10c, 10d. The conveyers 12, 13 may be disposed at an angle, other than 180 degrees, to each other and by suitable positioning of the switch 50 the angle of turning may be varied. The raising of the rollers 51 is performed by an inflatable member 52a disposed below the framework of the rollers. |
