An amine I is reacted with ethyl ethoxymethylene-malonate to form a compound II: and this is then cyclized by heating with POCl 3 and hydrolysing the chloro-compound obtained with CH 3 COONa in CH 3 COOH. The N atom is then alkylated with a C 1-4 alkyl halide or ester followed by saponification with an alkali metal hydroxide or alternatively the saponification is effected prior to the alkylation . Pharmaceutical compositions comprise the novel compounds together with suitable excipients and are useful as antibacterial agents.
