A process for producing a flame-retarded polyurethane foam which is non-dripping and forms a non-burning charcoat on its surface when in contact with a flame, comprises reacting a polyisocyanate with an alkoxylated disaccharide having an average of from one to two alkoxides per hydroxyl in the presence of a phosphorus-containing compound containing at least 7% phosphorus by weight, foaming the reaction product which is formed and curing the product, the amount of alkoxylated disaccharide being sufficient to produce a total disaccharide content in the product of at least 9% by weight of the foamed product, the amount of phosphorus-containing compound being sufficient to produce a total phosphorus content in the product of 0.7% to about 4% based on the weight of the product. The alkoxylated compounds are produced from sucrose, lactose, maltose, trehalose, cellobiose, gentiobiose and melibiose. Suitable phosphorus compounds are monoesters of phosphoric acid, mono- or diesters of pyrophosphoric acid, diphosphoric acids or diphosphonic acids and the reaction products of these compounds and of diphosphinic and phosphonic acids with an alkylene oxide such as ethylene, propylene and butylene oxides and dicyclopentadiene and 1,4-butadiene dioxides. As non-reactive phosphorus compounds that may be added to the reaction mixture there are given as examples tributyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate, tris-(2-chloro-ethyl) phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, butyl dibutyl phosphinate, diethyl 2-ethylhexyl-phosphonate, methyl dimethylphosphonite, butyl diphenyl phosphate, dimethyl methylphosphonate, tris-(2-chlorethyl) phosphite and tris-(2,3-dichloropropyl) phosphate.
