Trialkyl amines are prepared by a process comprising (a) preparing a mixture comprising an alkyl bromide raw material containing a major proportion of straight chain primary alkyl bromide and a minor proportion of straight chain secondary and branched chain primary alkyl bromides, the alkyl groups containing from 10 to 20 carbon atoms, a dialkyl amine where the alkyl groups contain from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, and water, the molar ratio of amine to alkyl bromide being in excess of 8:1, and the ratio of water to amine being from 5: 95 to 20: 80 by weight; (b) reacting said mixture at a temperature from 100 DEG to 190 DEG F. for 2 to 7 minutes; and (c) heating said mixture to a temperature of from 275 DEG to 375 DEG F. for a time of 4.5 to 12 minutes, the pressure being sufficient to keep the amine in the liquid state. The alkyl bromide raw material preferably contains from 88% to 95% by weight of straight chain primary alkyl bromide, and the preferred amine is dimethylamine. The reaction may be carried out in batch or continuous manner. |
