The invention comprises estra-5(10),7-diene- 3,17-dione and its preparation by (a) pyrolysis of andosta-4,7-diene-3,17-dion-19-ol or (b) reduction of 10#-acetoxy-estra-4,7-diene-3,17-dione with zinc dust. Estra - 5(10),7 - diene - 3#,17# - diol is prepared from the compound of the invention by reduction with lithium aluminium hydride or sodium borohydride. Equilin and equilenin are prepared from the compound of the invention by incubation with Nocardia restrictus. |
