The press is for bending plain hinge straps with an end roll for a hook. It is used on straight cut lengths (1) of rectangular section metal bar. A die (4) with a half round convex active face (4a) is used with a matrix (3), of which the active face (3a) is similar but concave and of a greater radius. The loci of the die and matrix are co-planar throughout the operation, the matrix being moved (10) between stations by a ram. The roll is started by pushing (13) the bar (1) axially between the die and matrix with loci co-incident and the matrix is retracted from the completion of the roll by the application of further axial thrust and movement into the matrix. A table (8) supports the bar while thrust is applied by a second ram (12, 13). The press includes a bar magazine (6).
