The methods is for protecting underground cables or providing fluid conduits and comprises digging a trench of width and depth slightly greter than the channel to be used, laying a concrete floor (2) in the trench, laying the cables (C) on the concrete flooring, covering the cables (C) with a preferably semi-cylindrical fibre reinforced polyester cover (4) and pouring a covering layer of concrete (7) on the cover (4). The floor (2) is conveniently levelled between lathes which, when removed, leave steps to receive side flanges (6) of the cover (4). The cover (4) may be secured in position by concrete nails driven through its flanges (6). A base of similar material to the cover may also be provided on the concrete flooring, the cover being sealed to the base along its side flanges (6). The channel thus formed can be used as a fluid line or for protecting cables or conduits at a very shallow depth.
