An electromechanical safety system which incorporates proximity detectors ensures that material is fed and positioned correctly for a machine such as a press operating at high production rates. The system also synchronises operation of the machine w.r.t. the material feed. A proximity detector is mounted in the path of strip material whose feed is controlled automatically. This feed corresponds with a part of the machine cycle and when a predetermined length has been fed the machine tool operates in a defined area. A second detector is mounted close to a cam with a notch and fixed to the machine shaft. Rotation of the shaft corresponds with the complete operating cycle of the machine. The detectors are connected to an enclosure contg. control circuit components and which are connected to a mains supply.
