The rolling effort required for railway wagons is measured in order to determine when bearings will require changing. This is partic. important where the wagons enter a ceramic furnace and are subjected to thermal effects. Extensometer gauges are mounted on the hook of a tractive system in order to measure the tractive or rolling force. These gauges are connected into a Wheatstone bridge (25). This is connected to a power supply circuit (27) by a screened cable (26) and the bridge output is connected to an amplifier (31). The amplifier output is connected to a threshold circuit (32) which controls a relay (34) to operate an alarm circuit (A). The amplifier output is also received by a memory circuit (M) whose output is connected to a numerical indicator (35) and printer (I) to give time and wagon identity information.
