The ball-or roller bearing, particularly of the taper-roller type, absorbs thrust loads in both directions. It is enclosed by an outer ring (12) so as to leave a radial clearance, the width of this ring being greater than that of the bearing itself by the amount of axial bearing clearance. The outer races (10, 11) of the bearing are secured to the ring, and one or both of them can be spring-loaded in the axial direction. The design allows the axial bearing clearance to be pre-set before installation.
