Roller for monitoring stress distribution across moving strip - esp. metal strip during cold rolling, where roller shaft carries row of stress sensors

The roller consists of a non-rotating shaft carrying a row of rollers with a total length at least equal to the strip width. The rollers can rotate on, but do not touch, the shaft. The shaft carries a row of sensors monitoring the distance between the bore of rollers and the shaft, this distance corresp. with the stresses across the strip. Rollers are pref. supported on the shaft by hydrostatic- or magnetic- bearings. The sensors are pref. located in a hollow shaft, and the pref. sensors are inductive transducers. The roller assembly can pref. be moved in directions at 90 degrees to the direction of strip travel. Used in the mfr. of very flat rolled strip.
