Desulphurising of gases - by combustion with air in fluidised bed of limestone and coal

Gas mixts. contg. H2S are desulphurised by blowing with air through a fluidised combustion bed contg. CaCO3 particles. Used for treatment of coke oven gases, esp. disposal of wash water, used to remove H2S and NH3 from the gas, in place of wet catalysis or Claus processes. Plant and energy costs are much reduced. Chemical energy of H2S can be recovered as steam or electrical energy. The fluidised bed temp. of 800-950 degrees C. is well below usual combustion temps. and eliminates the problem of nitrogen oxide formation. The only waste prods. are CaSO4 and ash.
