A gantry crane comprises a bridge 6, 7, 8 supported by columns 1, 2 travelling on rails 3, mounted at the sides of the bridge are two upper crabs 10, 11 and two lower crabs 12, 13, all of which are independently driven though they may be synchronized in pairs. Hoist mechanisms of the crabs 10, 11 with drums 34, 35 are displaceable at right angles to the direction of travel of the crabs between inner positions I and outer positions II so that the crabs on the same side of the bridge may overtake one another. This permits various manipulations about horizontal and vertical axes of large sections, e.g. 50, of a ship during assembly, Figs. 3 to 22 (not shown). |
