Mill has a roughing train (I), followed by a heat screen (II) or furnace for the thermal insulation or reheating of the rough rolled slab, and then a finishing train (III) producing strip with final thickness. Screen (II) is pref. a tunnel kiln with a refractory lining on its walls, and possibly provided with electric resistance-, gas-, or oil-heating; and/or induction heating can be provided at least at the outlet end of the screen or kiln (II). The kiln (II) pref. has an inert or non-oxidising atmos.; whereas train (III) pref. contains several roll stands, one being driven at constant seed, esp. via an a.c. synchronous motor. Train (III) pref. contains >=1 stand producing a specified redn. in strip thickness. The strip mill has a shorth length, and can be operated at speeds which are slower than usual; it can produce up to 1 million tonnes strip/year more than 2/3 metre wide.
|
