1,076,501. Rotary-piston internal combustion engines. TOYO KOGYO KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Feb. 8, 1965 [Feb. 17, 1964], No. 5446/65. Heading F1. An apex seal for the piston of a rotary-piston I. C. engine of the kind having a three or more sided piston planetarily rotatable within a casing having an epitrochoidal inner profile with two or more lobes, comprises a general rectangular body (7), Fig. 2 (not shown) formed with at leastone longitudinal hole (8) and at least one transverse hole (13) extending from the inner face of the seal and intersecting the hole or holes (8) to leave a thickness of material on the outer surface sufficient to withstand the sliding frictional forces between the seal and the casing inner profile. The holes reduce the mass of the seal with consequent reduction in the centrifugal forces and rubbing between the seal and casing. The reduced mass permits the use of materials which are more capable of withstanding the high temperatures and pressures occurring in the engine. |
