1500990 Magnetic separation OCCIDENTAL PETROLEUM CORP 28 Feb 1975 [11 March 1974 (2)] 8628/75 Heading B2J Non-magnetic conductive (NC) metals such as aluminium and copper are separated from particulate mixtures containing such metals by passing a stream of such mixture in a first direction through the travelling magnetic field of the stator of a linear motor so orientated with respect to the first direction as to divert the NC metals from the path followed by the remainder of the stream components. As shown, a particulate mixture 22 is fed on to a conveyor belt 12 which passes over a linear motor 18, energised to produce a travelling magnetic field which laterally displaces a first fraction 24, mainly constituted by NC metals, on to a second belt 14. Components 33 other than NC metals in the fraction 24 are separated out by the action of a second linear motor 20 over which the belt 14 passes, so that the final fraction 35 which is diverted on to a third belt 16 consists almost entirely of NC metals. The belts may be vibrated to aid segregation of the various components. In a second embodiment, a single conveyor belt is associated with two linear motor stators and with guides for the separated fractions (Fig. 3, not shown). |
