Methane is fed at 80-500 degrees C over a nickel catalyst with >=10 wt.% of nickel on a carrier, for the production of carbon and hydrogen. The nickel has the form of particles which are smaller than 20 nm and the catalyst, loaded with carbon, is periodically regenerated in the normal manner. The size of the nickel particles is pref. between 3 and 6 nm. The methane gas is pref. processed at 100-300 (120-180) degrees C. The nickel content is >=30 wt.% and the ratio of nickel to carrier may be as 95:5. A mixt. of methane and nitrogen is fed over the catalyst and the H2 and N2 are sepd. by adsorption of the H2. Regeneration of the catalyst takes place at between 150-400 degrees C. Used for the conversion of poor natural gas mixt. into gas mixtures which can be used economically in industry. The technique employed makes it possible to break down methane at a relatively low temp. using a nickel catalyst.
|
