Spanner for applying high torque - has bevel gear drive fitted in circular head and driven from shaft in handle

A spanner which can apply a very high torque has a circular head with a recess to receive a bevel gear wheel(5) which runs in a bearing(22) and is retained by a spring ring(4). The bevel gear(5) meshes with a pinion fixed to the end of a shaft(8) which runs in bearings in the tubular handle(7). The bevel gear(5) has a hexagonal recess to fit over a nut or bolt head. The outer end of the shaft(8) has a recess to receive a hexagonal key. The gear drive enables a high torque to be applied through the bevel gear(5) by a relatively low torque applied at the end of the shaft(8).
