Radioactive molybdenum 99 is prepared by neutron irradiation of MoO 3 , other molybdenum oxides, or molybdic acid. The molybdenum compound is then dissolved in a base and the solution is adjusted to an acid pH, but above 2À5, and contacted with an inorganic anion exchange material which retains the molybdenum. In an example, irradiated MoO 3 is dissolved in NH 4 OH, and the solution is acidified to pH 3À0-3À5 with nitric acid and then passed through a column of alumina. Short-lived radioactive technetrum 99m, useful in medical research and diagnosis, is prepared by elution of the ion exchange material with hydrochloric acid. Other suitable anion exchange materials are ZrO 2 , ThO 2 , WO 3 and SiO 2 . |
