The contact surface unit is for printing heads on line printers and is intended to provide positive location for the paper and ready adjustment to accommodate a range of sizes. The contact block (10) is fixed to the frame of the machine and the paper (12) passes over a curved surface (16) that serves as a contact surface for printing, e.g. with a needle matrix head (14). The block is of sufficiently large cross section to maintain alignment of the paper when fed through. The paper passes over the curved underside (20) and the mid section of the block is profiled to avoid contact. By limiting the contact surface the friction between the block and the paper is minised. A profiled groove (30) allows adjustable machine elements to be freely mounted. The head (14) is fed across the paper by a roller (22) contact drive unit.
