A metal graduated measuring staff comprises a first graduated scale (1), a further graduated scale (2) and a support member (3). The two scale sections are brought into abutment and adjusted so that the scales coincide and are continuous. For this purpose the abutting ends (5) are angled and the adjustment is made under the control of a photoelectric probe measuring head. When the adjustment is completed, the scale sections are fixed in position by spot welds (7, 8) positioned between the scales and the support member by welding devices (6). At least two and pref. four welds are applied. By this means scales of any length may be constructed.
