The dental care compositions contain 0.01 to 10 % by weight, based on the total weight of the dental care composition, of alkali metal salts or alkaline earth metal salts or of the free base of 3,4-dihydro-1,2,3-oxathiazin-4-one. This sweetener has, in the stated amounts, an intensely sweet taste to which the gustatory nerves respond very rapidly so that unwanted taste notes of other components of the dental care composition, in particular the usually bitter taste of the surfactants present therein, are effectively masked. Furthermore, the sweetener is very compatible with the other ingredients of the dental care composition, for example humectants, abrasives and the like. The dental care compositions described here can be mouthwashes, toothpastes or tooth powders, or can be in the form of chewable tablets.
