PURPOSE:To obtain a highly photosensitive resin readily soluble in water, useful as a photosensitive vehicle for coating materials, by incorporating a compound, prepared from polyvinyl alcohol or partly saponified polyvinyl acetate and a specific styrylpyridinium salt, as part of structural units into the resin. CONSTITUTION:Polyvinyl alcohol or partly saponified polyvinyl acetate is reacted with 0.5-10mol% per vinyl alcohol units of a styrylpyridinium salt of formula I: (R1 is H, alkyl, or aralkyl group; R2 is H or alkyl group; R3 is alkyl or phenyl group; n is an integer 1-6) at room temperature to 100 deg.C for about 1-48hr to give a photosensitive resin having a high sensitivity consisting of a polyvinyl alcohol derivative having units of formula II: (X<-> is ions of strong halide or sufuric acid ions; R1, R2, and n are the same as described above) as part of structural units. |
