A steering column arrangement in a forward control vehicle comprises a support for the steering column 1 including a strut 6 extending in the direction of travel and divided at predetermined buckling points into sections 7, 7a 7b one of which has a support 16 forming part of a device which initiates buckling of the strut in the event of a collision of the vehicle. On collision a sliding bolt 19, Fig. 1, is pushed backwards by the bumper 24 of the vehicle and tensions a cable 15 which passes round a boss 18 of the steering gear 5 and the top of the support 16 to a member 11 which secures the strut 6 to the dashboard 14. The tensioned cable displaces the support 16 and section 7a of the strut downwards, the spring-loaded toothed member 27 engaging a detent 30 of the support to prevent rebound of the strut. In an alternative (Fig. 3), the strut 6 is buckled by a mass 40 mounted at the top of the support 161 and rebound is prevented by a barbed arcuate member 281 passing through an opening 43 in the strut section 7a1.
