<p>Aldose is converted to aldonic acid by an aerobic microbial fermentation process, in which only part of the aldose is added initially to the fermentation medium, partly allowed to ferment and subsequently the remainder of the aldose is added and allowed to ferment. The total quatity of aldose is greater than 40% of the medium. The pH of the medium initially is adjusted to between 5 and 7; after addition of the aldose the pH is allowed to fall to 5.</p> |
