APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR THE APPLICATION OF LIQUID CO2

A method is provided for fumigating grain stored in bins by the gravity penetration method. The method comprises sequentially applying methyl bromide and liquid CO2 to the upper layer of grain stored therein by providing a liquid CO2 container with a delivery conduit attached to and adapted to be in a fluid communication therewith, and providing the delivery conduit with an outlet remote from the container, wherein the inner cross-sectional area of the conduit is at least 15 times as great as the cross-sectional area of the outlet and passing liquid CO2 from the container through the delivery conduit to the outlet of the delivery conduit. By this method, CO2 is used as a carrier for methyl bromide, thereby achieving deeper penetration for fumigating grain in a silo.
