Device for embroidering pattersn with a zig-zag sewing machine having a main memory for storing predetermined signals for controlling the orthogonal displacement of the needle and feed dog relative to one another is provided with an auxiliary memory (ROMs) for storing data serving for selection of the data from the main memory (ROMm) for controlling the respective orthogonal co-ordinates. Auxiliary memory serves also for the selection of a special pair of stitch control data associated with the control of the co-ordinate data, the being used jointly for controlling the pattern and the respective direction. Storage capacity of main memory is ultilised optimally.
