The invention consists of an entirely solid passive bistable display device, without any mechanical moving parts and with low energy consumption. In the device, a conducting solid electrolyte is used of an ionic species which can exist in this solid in two different oxidation states. The changing of the oxidation state of the mobile species by applying an electric field using electrodes, one of which is transparent, leads to a change in the optical properties of the solid, and therefore to the appearance of a contrast with the parts of the solid not subjected to this electric field. A solid electrolyte according to the invention is obtained by reacting a cuperous halide, in particlar CuBr, with compounds of the alkylhexamethylenetetraamine type or of the N,N'-dialkyltriethylenediamine type.
