The invention is applied to a known automatic-ranging pulse radar utilizing contiguous distance gates; the gates are switched periodically such that a given gate acts as the "early" gate and later as the "late" gate, and vice-versa for the other gate. The effect of differences in characteristics of the gates in thereby reduced.
