Light from optic fibres in an array 12 is passed sequentially through a scanning disc 15 (Figs. 4a, 4b) to a photomultiplier tube 21 so that the light energy from each optical fibre is received in turn. The electrical output of the tube 21 is modified for each fibre in a signal correction circuit 23 by control functions stored in a programmable memory (Fig. 5) such that non-uniformities in the transmission characteristics of each optical fibre can be compensated. The scanning disc 15 has strobe slots around its periphery to enable each fibre being monitored to be identified. <IMAGE>
