The shaft seal comprises a housing with primary seal and downstream of this, a secondary seal. The latter contains a ring on the shaft and a slide ring non-rotatably, axially slidably and sealingly held in the housing. During normal operation, the rings are not in contact. The slide ring leaves a throttle gap around the shaft and is spring-loaded away from the seal ring. The slide ring is retained and sealed in an annular groove in a carrier and slidable between the groove bottom and a stop. The carrier contains the throttle gap, seals to the housing, a spring loading the slide ring and a stop which limits further axial motion after the rings make contact.
