A control lever for a transversely mounted gearbox in a motor vehicle with a transversely mounted engine. Remote gear lever (1) pivots about a ball joint (1a) to rotate a control shaft (2) about its axis (e) and also to move it longitudinally. This shaft is connected to a receptive shaft (3) via an articulated connection (c). This receptive shaft is parallel to the control shaft and is connected to the selector shaft (4) on the gearbox via a universal coupling (5) which prevents engine vibrations from affecting the gear lever. The selector shaft is attached via a cordon to a selector finger (6) which drives the selector forks in the gearbox.
