The optimised aq. surfactant systems are prepd. by (a) preparing a series of aq. surfactant systems having different brine concns. and contg. a surfactant with a relatively small hydrophobic portion; (b) mixing each system with a homologous are series of pure hydrocarbons and allowing the mixts. to equilibrate; (c) determining the relative vol. of the phases in the equilibrated mixts. and plotting a phase vol. diagram for each hydrocarbon; (d) mixing a sample of the oil to be recovered with at least one of the systems in (a) allowing the mixt. to equilibrate, and comparing it with the phase vol. diagrams of (b); and (c) using the comparison, in conjunction with the relationship that increasing electrolyte concn. is equivalent to increasing the hydrophobic portion of the surfactant, to prepare a new aq. surfactant system which is adjusted so as to yield 3 phases over a narrow salinity range on contact with the oil to be recovered. The optimised surfactant systems are designed to form, on contact with the oil in the reservoir, microemulsions which are highly effective in displacing the oil from the reservoir.
|
