The wire which is to be formed into a spring is fed between rollers (15, 16) to a spring forming station (14) in which the wire is bent round by tools (19, 20). The pitch of the coil spring is controlled by a probe (21) which extends between the coils of the spring. The position of the probe is controlled by a cam (31) connected to the drive of the wire infeed rollers (15, 16). The cam is a linear one and is moved to and fro by means of a gear rack. The completed spring is cut from the wire by a cutter (22).
