For low-displacement top-pan precision balances, there is proposed an overload protection of low constructional height which can also be used for rectangular balance pans under a relatively high nominal load and which acts virtually independently of the point of engagement of the load. The balance pan is of multi-part design. Springs (40) stretched between the upper part (18) and lower part (20) of the balance pan hold the two parts (18, 20) apart from one another, with the cooperation of pivotable spacer pieces (38), into a limiting position. Under overload or an impact, the two parts fold together in a parallel movement, until the upper part (18) rests on the balance housing (10). <IMAGE>
