<p>An apparatus and method for injecting fuel into an internal combustion engine by use of a fuel injection system. The apparatus includes: a plurality of injectors, a source of fuel, a supply conducting means, a pressure booster, a low pressure pump means, and an electronic computer. The electronic control computer includes: a pulse shaper, a counter, and a plurality of variable width pulse generators. The electronic control computer may also include a start-up circuit, a warmup circuit, and a means, such as a constant current drive circuit for correcting for incidental system variables. The method includes: supplying fuel from a fuel source to a plurality of injectors under an elevated pressure greater than a vapor pressure for the fuel in the injectors; and discharging the fuel within a cylinder head of the engine from the injectors having a discharge end located upstream of and adjacent to intake valves in the engine.</p> |
