The bricks are pressed from a mixture of isotropic graphite granules and coated active fuel particles and the channels for coolant are formed during the pressing operation so that after heat treatment they are of the correct size and tolerances without the need for machining of the green state bricks. The active fuel may be concentrated in cylindrical zones surrounded by coolant channels or may be dispersed homogeneously in all except a fuel free skin 2-10 mm thick. Cost reduction, more economical use of fuel, improved heat transfer and superior resistance to radiation flux.
