The thermal power installation (10) comprises solar collectors (18) which in daylight heat a heat exchange medium. This circulates through a heat exchanger (16) where it heats up a working medium (20) used in a cycle to produce mechanical enegy. Part of the energy in the heat exchange medium is stored in unit (14), via a parallel circuit. At night the heat exchanger (20) receives heat via an alternative circuit. The switch-over from day to night operation and vice versa is affected by appropriate control of lumps (74, 64) and valves (76, 84) in the circuits.
