A tape recorder has a mechanical change over facility to reverse the direction of winding in a short period. The tape spools are mounted on the end of pivoted levers with a coil spring to maintain contact with the main wheel. The drive is from a motor to a pulley with a coupled flywheel that is driven in one direction. Friction contact rollers transmit motion to the tape drive wheel. An additional idler provides the reverse motion.
